PRINT ON CANVAS (MYSTIC SPIRAL WITH GALAXY - Edition 1)
MYSTIC SPIRAL IS ABOUT OVERCOMING ADVERSITY.
The wood I used to create “Mystic Spiral” is a beautiful spiral-shaped cedar root donated by one of my clients who cherished it as a memento from his father who had given it to him about 20 years earlier. I actually struggled with it for quite while before I was able to see how to turn it into one of my artworks. His generosity had given me an opportunity to meditate on spirals and I saw them as symbols of chaos, disaster, disorder, confusion and uncertainty.
Negative, destructive things force us to change and can either destroy us or give us the opportunity for a fresh start, for growth through struggle with challenges, for shedding the past and building something better or acquiring a new outlook in life, for turning apparent liabilities into assets.
Throughout the world, the spiral appears to be one of the most ancient symbols humanity has used to represent spiritual concepts.
In many early Eastern representations, the idea of a spiraling chaos, a state of disorder and upheaval was given the shape of a cosmic Snake. The turbulence of this chaotic snake was however not viewed as a negative aspect of life, but rather as the necessary state that precedes the great moment of a new world order, the moment of creation. Thus, Chaos was viewed as the condition that must precede a brilliant generation of ideas and new beginnings.
Spirals can be ascending or descending, thus they may represent the ascent toward a higher state of awareness or plunging deep into one’s inner self.
The Chinese character for Chaos:
is in itself reminiscent of something that is trying to emerge through a loop, a whirlpool, whirlwind or a wave of disaster. I see in this ideogram the image of the one’s inner core, the naked self that is stripped from conceits and illusions by life’s challenges, trials and tribulations and is reborn.
It is that naked self that allows one’s strength to emerge through chaotic situations where everything spins out of control. I see it reborn through its ordeals and reaching for the “light at the end of the tunnel”, the newly found brilliance, creativity or understanding that one may find at the center of the spiral.
